Postdoctoral Associate Openings

Jander Lab

Postdoc for Arabidopsis-aphid Interactions Study

A postdoctoral position is available to study interactions between Arabidopsis and Myzus persicae (green peach aphid) in Georg Jander’s lab. The position will be filled as early as January, 2010, and funding is available for two years.

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will conduct a functional analysis of aphid saliva, with particular emphasis placed on identifying salivary effectors that either facilitate insect feeding or elicit plant defense responses. Other research will include analysis of mutants and natural variation in Arabidopsis aphid resistance. Development of additional areas of interest within the scope of the project is encouraged.

Requirements

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in a related field. Candidates with backgrounds in molecular biology, insect behavior assays, or small molecule analysis are particularly encouraged to apply.

To Apply:

Please send a description of prior research experience, career goals, curriculum vitae, and contact information for three references to: Georg Jander, Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research, 1 Tower Road, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA; email: gj32@cornell.edu; phone: (607) 254-1365.

Jander Lab

Postdoc for Plant-Insect Interactions Study

A postdoctoral position is available to study plant-insect interactions in Georg Jander’s lab at the Boyce Thompson Institute. Genetic, biochemical, and insect behavior research approaches will be used to study natural variation in maize resistance to aphids and rootworms. The position will be filled as early as January, 2010, and funding is available for three years.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the successful applicant will include the design and implementation of laboratory and field experiments related to maize-insect interactions. Development of additional areas of interest within the scope of the project is encouraged. The research will also involve close interactions with engineers at Cornell University, who are developing automated insect detection systems for laboratory and agricultural applications.

Requirements

PhD in related field. Candidates with backgrounds in genetic mapping and quantitative genetics are particularly encouraged to apply.

Blissard Lab

Viral Envelope Protein Structure-Function Studies

An NIH funded postdoctoral position is available immediately for studies aimed at understanding the detailed structure and function of the baculovirus envelope glycoprotein, GP64. Structural studies will focus on crystallization of truncated GP64 proteins containing the receptor binding domain. Functional studies will utilize a well-developed genetic system for pseudotyping baculovirus virions with modified GP64 proteins for analysis of receptor binding, membrane fusion, and/or virus assembly and egress. A background in virology, molecular biology, structural biology, or genetics is desirable.

To Apply:

Please send CV and names/addresses of three references to: Dr. Gary Blissard, Boyce Thompson Institute at Cornell University, Tower Road, Ithaca, NY 14853-1801. Phone (607) 254-1366. Send applications by email to gwb1@cornell.edu.
