Science After School fosters informal science learning opportunities for young people within their communities. BTI actively promotes science learning as a community-based activity because it encourages kids to explore relationships between science and their everyday lives. As science educators and scientists, we work directly with K-8th grade students, after-school coordinators, parents, teachers, and other community members to provide young people with diverse opportunities to develop rich interests and experiences in science. Through these partnerships we expose kids to the many fascinating and beneficial roles that plant have in our environment and society today. By making science part of out-of-school time, kids can develop deeper interests and understandings in science.
BTI partners directly with After School Programs and Youth Centers in our local community. During this partnership, science educators, scientists and volunteers make weekly visits to the After School program and lead small groups of students in science activities using a hands-on, minds-on, inquiry approach. We have taken special care to develop a weekly series of activities that are age-appropriate, active, educational and fun. BTI activities align with state and national science standards giving kids opportunities to explore and expand upon their classroom learning experiences outside of the classroom.
Nature Explorers (grades k-2) offers young children diverse opportunities to explore and investigate science through literacy, art, inquiry and play.
Science Club (grades 3-5) is designed to encourage and support elementary students’ growing interests and curiosities related to science by giving kids opportunities to do the things that scientists do, namely asking questions about the world around them, planning and conducting experiments and trying to explain their discoveries.
Community program coordinators interested in participating in Nature Explorers, Young Scientists or a combination of the two programs should contact the Education Outreach Coordinator, Tiffany Fleming at pgrp-outreach@cornell.edu or 607-254-6732.
